The Blog-The Lost Art of Breadmaking
There’s one way to save money and that’s to make things from scratch. Cakes, pies, and yes, bread. One of my favorite splurges at the supermarket used to be their bread topped with cheese and sundried tomatoes, but since they raised the price by almost $2, I got to thinking I could make the same thing for half the price.
I decided to pull out my bread machine and try my hand at making homemade bread. I’ve liked the results and just as I expected, making your own gourmet bread can shave some money off your budget. Friday was a busy day for me because my romance novel is released this week and I was working on interviews and blogs to help promote it. When I get busy, there’s always the danger of falling back on convenience foods, but as we’d eaten plenty the day before, I knew I could get away with cooking something light.
I thought I’d make homemade Italian bread to make grilled cheese sandwiches and also roasted corn chowder. So early Friday morning, I pulled out the bread machine, loaded everything into it and pressed the start button. I went to walk away and didn’t hear anything. I turned it off, reset it, tried again and still nothing. Panic set in when I knew I had flour and yeast sitting in the container and a bread machine that wasn’t working. I ended up making the bread by hand, and if any of you have made bread before you know it’s not something you do when you’re short on time.
The bread turned out great, but I was worried that my bread machine had finally bitten the dust. The next day I tried to make bread again, but still got the same thing, just silence. Then I don’t know why, but I switched to another setting and voila, it was working again. And a good thing came out of this. While I was reading the manual to see if I could diagnose the problem, I discovered that the particular model I own, allows you to make homemade jam as well as bread. I guess it pays to read every page of the manual for any appliance you own, it might have built in features that can save you money.
