Don’t Throw Them Away
I love getting as much use out of stuff I buy as I can. My motto is nothing’s a waste of money if you use it wisely. You wouldn’t think vegetables fit into that category but they do. Each time I prepare a vegetable I keep the trimmings and pieces I don’t use in the recipe or meal. I use a freezer bag to put things like carrot peelings, onion roots, ‘ribs’ of kale, and anything that’s a little bruised into it. At the end of the week, I put them into a large pan, add water, a couple of bay leaves, some peppercorns and bring it to boil, then…

Last Day To Buy Your Content Creation Collection Toolbox and More Ways to Use the Content
Yesterday, I posed three tips on using the content you’ll find in the spring version of the Toolbox that’s currently on sale. Here are a few more ideas- Create a Class People love learning new skills and gaining knowledge and it’s also a great way to pull in an audience. Problem is what do you teach? Putting together a class can also be time consuming…believe me when I say I speak from experience. But what if you could sort through a bunch of content and pull similar topics together and have ‘sort of’ a ready made class? Looking through the list of content in this toolbox, I see lots of…

What’s on Sale?-March
I thought we’d bring back an old feature that used to be here on Budget Smart Girl. At the beginning of each Month, I’ll be posting a list of things that are usually on sale that month. I say ‘usually’ because things can change. For example, maybe there’s an oversupply of something and it will go on sale every month. Here’s the list I came up with for this month- March means St. Patrick Day so think foods like potatoes, corned beef and cabbage and also soda bread. These items are on sale all month but I think you’ll find bigger discounts after March 17th March is also frozen food…

Budget Smart Girl Tries Brandless
I recently heard about a company that sells food online. Not just any food but good for you stuff that’s organic and non-GMO. Added plus…I was told everything was $3 and shipping is free when you spend $39 or more. Last week I decided to give it a try. The company is called Brandless. The packaging is plan and simple which reminds me of the generic products you used to see at supermarkets but I have to say the taste is a whole lot better. I haven’t sampled everything I ordered but so far, so good. The sweet potato tortilla chips…well, I’ll give them a ten. Same goes…

Fall’s Best Buys for the Budget Smart Cook
One of my favorite things about fall is taking a walk through the produce department and checking out all the new fruits and vegetables that are at their peak this time of the year. Apples, squash, root vegetables…the great thing is they’re budget friendly too. Here’s why a Budget Smart Cook should use them in every day meals. They’re High in Fiber Fiber is not only good for our health, but it’s a friend to the wallet too. Fiber helps to keep your blood sugar at a constant level and makes you feel fuller faster. Making a vegetable pot pie from fall produce is a budget stretcher and a great…

What’s a Healthy Snack?
One treat that often finds its way into my shopping cart is a package of peanut butter cups. This might be one of my guilty temptations, but the good news is some snacks can actually be good for us. So if you’re on a budget…or even a diet, how do you make the right decisions about what to slip into the shopping cart? Here are some ideas- Just What Nature Intended Elaine Wilkes N. C., M. A., who is also known as The Snack Therapist, suggests selecting a snack that’s as close to nature as you can find. Go with the fruits and veggies and stay away from anything that’s…

Making the Most of Summer Produce
One of the things I love most about summer is that there are so many fruits and vegetables to choose from. And best of all, you get to eat some that aren’t available all year round. While produce isn’t as cheap as it once was, now’s still a great time to make the most of what summer has to offer. But It’s Hot Outside It’s often unbearable to think about hot foods when it’s 90 degrees outside, but summer is the best time to start planning ahead. One chore I have on my do to list every summer is to make soup and freeze it ready for fall and winter…

A Budget Smart Cook’s Secret Ingredient
One of the things I love most about summer is that fresh herbs can be found just about everywhere, in the produce department of any supermarket, at farmer’s markets, and yes, your own backyard. And there are two great things about herbs. One they’re packed with flavor, so a little goes a long way. And two, they can make even the blandest of foods taste like gourmet fare. Herbs Go with Just About Everything You can add herbs to just about any dish, everything from sandwiches to pasta If you’re got a recipe you love but you’re growing tired of it, try adding some fresh herbs. One of my favorite…
